According to what has been recorded in Shi Ji·Wu Taibo Shijia, in late Shang dynasty, Taibo, eldest son of the ancient duke Dan-fu who was ancestor of Zhou Clan, and his brother Zhong Yong came from Shaanxi to as far as Jiangnan (south Yangtze River area) region to abdicate the power to their brother Jili and Jili’s son Chang (King Wen of Zhou). They shared the same customs and habits with the local people and were advocated by the aborigines. Taibo brought advanced technology and culture of Central China to the south and led people to carry out agricultural production and irrigation construction, which promoted development of social economy and created Wu Culture. Taibo had no descendants. Zhou Zhang, great-great-great-grandson of Zhong Yong, was conferred by King Wu of Zhou Dynasty as monarch of Wu. Before Zhu Fan moved the capital to Suzhou, Meili was capital of Gouwu State.
